Our staff of doctors and medical professionals are here to serve you.

Dr. Saima Afrose

General Practioner

Dr Afrose moved to Carman with her husband and two children and began working full time at Carman Community Health Centre in August 2021. Dr. Afrose received her medical training and worked as a family physician in Bangladesh until coming to Manitoba in 2013. She recently completed the Internal Medical Graduate Program within Southern Health-Santé. Much of Dr Afrose’s past experience has been working as a family physician in a rural setting, and finds Carman to be similar in many ways. She enjoys working with all ages and has increasing interest in geriatric care. She has found Carman to be very nice and welcoming to her and her family and they are looking forward to being part of our community.

Dr. Tyler Atchison

General Practioner

Dr. Atchison is a family physician from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He completed medical school at the University of Manitoba and the family medicine residence program at Dalhousie University. Dr. Atchison is committed to a rural family practice, and looks forward to bringing students to Carman for rural family medicine experience.

Sara Birnie

Nurse Practioner

Sara Birnie holds a Bachelor of Nursing degree, along with a Masters of Nursing in Advanced Nursing Practice.  Her experience includes serving as a Nurse practitioner at the Selkirk Quick Care Clinic, and as an Emergency Registered Nurse at the Victoria General Hospital.  Raised in Neepawa, Sara and her husband have four children.  She loves to travel and enjoys curling, soccer and participating in marathons.

Dr. Jeanelle Braun

General Practioner

Born and raised in Winkler, Dr. Braun attended the University of Manitoba for her undergraduate degree and medical degrees.  She completed her residency training in Chilliwack, B.C.  She is married and has two children.

Dr. Curtis Thompson

General Practioner

Dr Curtis Thompson completed his medical training in Cuba and then practiced family medicine in his home country of Jamaica. He came to Canada in 2013 and worked as a Clinical Assistant in Calgary. He moved with his wife and three sons to Winnipeg in 2019 and completed the International Medical Graduate Program at U of Manitoba in 2020. Upon completion of the IMG program, he began his medical practice in Morris and Emerson and also provided medical services on a First Nation Community. He started working full time in Carman on May 15, 2023. Dr. Thompson is looking forward to meeting patients and providing medical services to help make services more accessible for all Manitobans. He enjoys small rural communities and has already found Carman to be welcoming and friendly.

Vanessa Jamault

Nurse Practioner

Vanessa Jamault graduated from the University of Manitoba Nurse Practitioner program in 2012.  Prior to becoming a Nurse Practitioner Vanessa’s 13 year nursing career has been primarily in rural Southern Manitoba in acute care, public health and now primary care.  Vanessa is also involved in the Nurse Practitioner Association of Manitoba and has published an article on Adolescent Concussions as well as presented on this topic and others at nursing conferences.

 

Dr. Shahrokh Nejad

Family Physician

Dr. Shahrokh Nejad has joined our clinic in a part time term position. He received his medical education and worked as a family physician in Iran, before coming to Canada in 2002. He completed the Manitoba International Medical Training Program and started working as a family physician in 2010. He has worked as a family physician in Virden, Rural and Northern Health, Pilot Mound and Crystal City. He is currently dividing his time between Carman and Toronto on a two week rotation. He is enjoying his time in Carman, and describes it as a good kind of busy in a nice community.

Dr. Kris Roberts

Family Physician

Kris completed his medical school in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota in 2008. He finished residency in 2010 at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. His special interests include family medicine and emergency medicine and he is also qualified to perform colonoscopies. Other interests include spending time with his wife and three children, running, soccer, and music.

Dr. Sonja Vermeulen

General Practitioner

Dr. Vermeulen is a family physician from South Africa. She completed medical school at the University of Pretoria and did her internship at military hospitals in Pretoria and Bloemfontein.  She recently completed the International Medical Graduate Program at the University of Manitoba and is living in Carman.  She is fluent in English, German and Afrikaans.
